Joan (McKay) Hurley


Joan (McKay) Hurley, 94, of East Haven, passed away at home on Sept. 21, surrounded by her family. She was born on Jan. 12, 1929, in Hamden to William and Margaret Mabel (Brereton) McKay.

Joan is survived by her loving children, Michael Hurley (Betsy) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Maureen Kennedy (Harold) of Hamden, along with four grandchildren: Matthew Hurley, Caitlin Raffone (Eric), Ryan Kennedy (Corrine Gach), and Shannon Serra (Michael); and three great-grandchildren, Chase Raffone, Lia Raffone and Samantha Serra. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Frank Hurley (2022); five brothers, William, James, Irving, Walter, and John McKay; three sisters, Marie, Frances, and Elizabeth; and a stepfather, Kenneth Stradley.

Her family brought her much joy. Joan was very active in the town of East Haven, volunteering at the Red Cross Blood Drive. Easter Seal Chairperson, the Historical Society, Friends of the Library, East Haven Green Restoration, and the first annual tree lighting on the Town Green. Most notable was 25 years in the East Haven Chamber of Commerce, including years as director, president, and lastly, executive director.

A special mention of gratitude for caregivers Melissa, Michelle, Katie, Debbie, and Elizabeth, and Home Care Plus Hospice nurses Lynn and Mike.

Family received friends on Sept. 25 at the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home & Cremation Service (Clancy Funeral Home), 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. All were welcome to meet and attend a graveside service on Sept. 26 in East Lawn Cemetery, 58 River Street, East Haven. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405 in memory of Joan Hurley.
