Donald Louis Harger Jr.


Donald Louis “Don” Harger Jr. passed away peacefully on Sept. 16 at Yale New Haven Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born the only son of Donald and Lois Harger in New Haven on Sept. 28, 1940.

Don attended local schools and graduated from Hamden High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Lake Champlain CVS-39 from 1959 to 1961.

After being honorably discharged, Don married the love of his life, Chickie Asarisi, on Sept. 28, 1963, in Hamden.

Don was a member of IUEC Local 91 and served in the elevator trade for 37 years. He then enjoyed 22 years of retirement.

Don was very active in the Westbrook community, serving on the Westbrook Police Advisory Board, Emergency Management, the Senior Center, Christmas Tree Lighting Committee, and the Conservation Commission Boating Division. A member of the Westbrook Elks, Don served as a trustee for five years. He was the member in charge of the Elks Bingo for 10 years. He was also an active member of Saint Mark’s Church.

Don is survived by his loving wife Chickie; son Donald L Harger III (Kristen) of North Haven; and daughter Danielle Graham and her husband Fredy Graham of Westbrook. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Don is also survived by three sisters, Carol Senerchia of Northford, Jackie Hurlburt of Cheshire, and Geri Rosenberg and her husband Paul of North Branford. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and dear friends whom he considered his extended family. Don was predeceased by his parents and sister, Edna Winter.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on Sept. 20 at Saint Mark’s Church, 222 McVeagh Road, Westbrook. Burial was private. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
