Marion Joyce Hurteau

On May 15, Marion Joyce (Gwinnell) Hurteau, 87, a longtime resident of Guilford, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at St. Raphael Hospital, New Haven. Devoted wife of the late Donald “Don” L. Hurteau. Marion was born in New Haven on April 14, 1936, the daughter of the late Edward Gwinnell and Bernadette (Brokelschen) Gwinnell. She was the loving mother of Barbara (Joe) Grandel, Ellen (John) Horan, Nancy LaFogg (Dave Abel), Donald E. Hurteau, Kathy (John) Duenzl, and Thomas W. Hurteau (Cara). She is survived by eight beloved grandchildren: Amy, Nicole, Andrew, Shannon, Angelica, Christopher, Jack, and Emily; and four great-grandchildren: Lorin, Marcel, Jaxton, and Camden. Marion was predeceased by her great-granddaughter Farah Lynn Hurteau; her sister Janet Murray; nephews, Timothy Murray and William R. Hurteau III; niece Denise Hurteau Fitzerald; sisters-in-law, June Hurteau Strawson and Dolores (Diane) Christe Hurteau; and brothers-in-law, Donald Murray, Vincent Strawson and William R. Hurteau II. Marion is survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Marion was a 1954 graduate of West Haven High School. In 1955, she married her high school sweetheart Don. Don and Marion first met at age nine, while Marion’s father was doing carpentry work for Don’s father on his family’s summer cottage on Lake Quonnipaug in North Guilford. After reconnecting in high school, they were married for 59 years. Marion’s great love of children has continued throughout her well-lived life. Not only was she a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, but her work roles also reflected her desire to support and nurture children. Marion was active in the North Guilford Melissa Jones School PTA, Speech Therapist Aide for the children in the Guilford School system, and a Nursery School Teacher for the North Guilford Nursery School, a role she loved. Marion will be remembered for the countless lives she touched, by all who knew and loved her and will forever remain in our hearts.
