Lloyd A. Dethloff

Lloyd A. Dethloff, 68, of Killingworth, passed away unexpectedly on May 8 from complications related to a chronic illness. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, friend, and teammate. Lloyd was born to the late Verrell and Janie (Arwine) Dethloff on Sept. 17, 1954, in Kansas City, Missouri, and spent his formative years in the area.

Lloyd served for three years as a medical laboratory technician at the Irwin Army Hospital, Fort Riley, Kansas, then went on to complete his undergraduate degree, a B.A. in chemistry and biochemistry from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. He earned a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. At UNC, he met Genie Corton, the woman he would marry in 1985. After Lloyd’s postdoctoral fellowship at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico, he and Genie moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1987, where they welcomed their daughter, Maggie, a few months later. Lloyd and Genie moved to Killingworth in 2007, where they found wonderful new friends in a bucolic setting.

Lloyd worked in pharmaceutical drug safety for 30 years, starting at Parke-Davis/Warner-Lambert (which later became Pfizer) in Ann Arbor, and retired in 2016, from Pfizer Pharmaceutical in Groton, as vice president of drug safety research and development. Always humble, Lloyd was nevertheless proud of what he had achieved in his career. Lloyd enjoyed his years as a researcher and found it very rewarding to advise and support young scientists, which he did both as an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and as a postdoctoral advisor at Pfizer.

Lloyd was a man of many interests and talents. He loved playing sports, was an avid collector of music, and a dedicated gardener who was particularly proud of his rose garden, which he started in retirement. Also, after retiring, Lloyd joined several sports groups in the area and played basketball, softball, and golf, which occupied much of his free time. Although he exhibited exceptional talent in all his sports of choice, softball brought him acknowledged achievement. His Wallingford league team won the league title in 2021; his Talaga Construction travel team won five tournaments in 2021; his Madison league team won the end-of-season tournament in 2022; and Lloyd was named to the All-Tournament team for the Virginia Beach tournament in 2022. Lloyd was the epitome of sportsmanship. As much as he enjoyed the friendships he made through sports, those who played with him were the beneficial recipients of his superior skill, unassuming demeanor, and loyal friendship. Above all else, he was a kind and gentle person who put humans and animals alike at ease and a generous and supportive husband who doted on his wife, daughter, and dog, Betty.

His loss will be sorely felt by his wife, Genie Corton Dethloff; his daughter, Maggie Sara Corton Dethloff of Sunnyvale, California; his siblings, Verrell Leon Dethloff of Bakersfield, California, Gaythal Boyd of Belton, Missouri, Stephanie Taylor of Independence, Missouri, and Tracy Dethloff of Lawrence, Kansas; and his numerous nieces and nephews; as well as his many friends, teammates, and extended circle of acquaintances. In the words of a close friend, “They don’t come any finer.”

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 5, and from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, June 6, at Swan Funeral Home in Madison, followed by a Memorial Service at noon on June 6.
