Anton E. Wohlert


Dr. Anton Emil Wohlert, 85, died March 19 in Branford, where he lived for 50 years. He was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, to Paul Mayo Wohlert and Carol Ruth Mason.

Anton graduated from Temple University and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He practiced optometry in New Jersey and Connecticut.

His lifelong passion was sailing, and he was an avid fan of sailing with his sons on Long Island Sound. Anton also loved the Scottish pipes and joined the Gaelic Highland Pipe Band in New Haven as a tenor drummer. He was active with the Branford Historical Society for many years and served as a docent of the Harrison House. In his retirement, Anton enjoyed horseback riding with his grandson and watching polo.

Anton served in the United States Army with the 8th Anti-Aircraft Artillery in Germany. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Dr. Wohlert is survived by his wife, Dona Zimmerman Wohlert of Branford; his two sons, Earl Ross Wohlert of Troy, Virginia, and Erik Kurt Wohlert of Guilford; his daughters-in-law, Heather Enos and Lisa Wohlert; and his grandchildren, Ryan and Maia Wohlert. His surviving siblings are Thomas Pringle, Barbara Leighton, and Michele Haberle.
