Giuseppa Giardina Manuli

Giuseppa Giardina Manuli, referred to by all who knew her as “nanna,” passed away March 24, peacefully at home surrounded by her family after 93 wonderful years of life.

She was born in 1930 in a small village in Sicily, Italy, where she met and married her husband, Giuseppe Manuli. They had seven children, six girls, and one boy. Her children fondly remember her skillfully climbing to the tops of olive and cherry trees and working hard alongside her husband to provide for their family and care for their community.

When Giuseppa was nearly in her 50s, she and her husband made the hard decision to leave their families, home, and life behind to come to the United States to give their children the best life they could. After the death of her husband, over 10 years after their arrival, she focused on being the family matriarch. Despite her early hearing loss that hindered her ability to learn English, she became a fixture in the tri-town community. Her daily walks from her home in Deep River to her family’s business, Reliable Cleaners and Tailoring in Chester made her beloved by all who got a smile and wave from her.

Giuseppa was an avid gardener, defender of the tomatoes, and adored flowers. She enjoyed nothing more than the sight of a good hanging plant and a plate of excellent pasta. She was a pillar of faith in her family and her church and will be missed by her Waterford Seventh Day Adventist Church friends. Her fierce devotion to her family can be seen in the exceptional lives of her children and their spouses, Carmela and Anthony Saglimbeni, Sr., Livia Manuli, Maria and Carmelo Spataro, Sebastiana and Carlo Oliveri, Claudia and Hank Bellows, Sebastiano and Graziella Manuli and Daniela Manuli. She was constantly caring for one of her nine grandchildren and welcomed seven bonus grandchildren in the form of their spouses. More recently, to her joy, she also cherished her eight great-grandchildren, who all adored their Nanna.

Visitation was held on March 29 at Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral home in Centerbrook. A public funeral service was held on March 30, in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at the Fountain Hill Cemetery in Deep River. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Giuseppa’s name to the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House Charity.
