Edwin Child

Edwin Child passed away March 9, 2023 in the company of Barbara, the love of his life and his bride of almost 70 years. The Bloody Old Englishman was born in Croydon, England on Oct. 23, 1929. Having survived the World War II Nazi bombing of Croydon, Edwin immigrated to the United States at the age of 18. He arrived in New York City aboard the Queen Elizabeth II. He lived in Madison, where he graduated from Daniel Hand High School.

Edwin met Barbara on a blind date and fell in love at first sight. They were married on May 9, 1953. He attended UConn Agricultural College and, using this knowledge, he was able to help his family develop Clover Acres a farm in Madison. Edwin attended night classes, where he obtained his plumbing and electrical licenses and started his own business that he operated for 65 years.

Edwin and Barbara raised three daughters, Kit (Barry), Lorraine (Chuck), and Doreen (Mark). Edwin also has seven grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Stephen), Justin, Jenny (Joel), Charles, Christopher, Joshua, and Elizabeth; and three great-grandchildren, Sebastian, Edwin and Weston.

The Child family were seasonal campers at Terrace Pines Campground in Center Ossipee, New Hampshire since 1966. Ed loved to spend his days on the lake and his nights with his girls sitting by the campfire. He enjoyed climbing Sentinel Mountain and Mount Chocorua with his expanding family. He mastered fly fishing and enjoyed making his own flies. All of Edwin’s descendants have regularly camped at and made forever memories at TP. During the summer that they were not camping at TP, they were traveling across country to Yellowstone. In 1982, Edwin took his family to England to share his heritage and visit with relatives and family friends. Edwin and Barbara belonged to the Homenoscitt Squares dance club and they hosted Saturday night square dancing in their basement. He loved being with family and telling stories again and again.

When asked what his religion was, he would reply in his still heavy British accent, “I live by the Boy Scout Law,” A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Such has Edwin led his life of 93 years.

Should friends desire, a memorial contribution may be made in memory to The Clinton Ambulance Division or First Church of Christ in Clinton.
