Peter I. Bullenkamp

Peter I. Bullenkamp, 86, of Westbrook, passed away peacefully on Dec. 17, 2022. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Lola, and their daughter, Janet. He is survived by his daughter Marjorie Bullenkamp-Zotto and son-in-law Stephen Zotto of Madison, and two grandchildren, Matthew, of Stamford, and Camille, of Portland, Oregon. He is also survived by a brother, Richard of Dahlonega, Georgia.

Peter was married to the love of his life, Lola, for 64 years until her passing just nine weeks before his. They were truly devoted to each other. They were always together and could frequently be seen holding hands. They traveled extensively and shared countless exciting adventures. Their favorite vacation destination was Bali, where they enjoyed immersing themselves in local culture.

Peter had a distinguished and rewarding career with the Military Sealift Command. During his 16-year tenure, he received numerous commendations and awards, including several Distinguished Civilian Service awards. After he and Lola retired from their respective jobs in 2001, they moved from Maryland to Westbrook to be close to their family.

He and Lola showed, by example, the importance of giving to one’s community. Together, they volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Literacy Volunteers. On Fridays, Peter would deliver meals to homebound residents, sometimes taking his granddaughter along with him, a time they both treasured. He and Lola also tutored for the Literacy Volunteers, where together, they helped to improve the lives of their many students and families.

Peter had many hobbies and interests. Prior to COVID, he frequented the library. He read extensively and loved to share his knowledge and his books with others. He was an avid boater starting as a young man in the Merchant Marines. His true passion was sailing. He refused to have a motor and, at times, spent hours patiently waiting for the wind to pick up. Following his move to Westbrook, he became interested in kayaking. He went on to build four beautiful wooden kayaks. One of those he built with his grandson. They spent many hours kayaking together on the Connecticut River. He was also a passionate gardener and orchid grower. He and Lola were both master gardeners, having completed the UConn program. He loved birds, especially the bluebirds, who came to the yard every year to feed and nest. For many years, Peter baked award-winning pies and breads. He competed in many local fairs.

Peter was a true gentleman. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was courteous, kind, and caring. He had a warm smile and a wonderful robust laugh. Peter will be missed by all who knew him and especially his family.
