Thomas Gerald ‘Tom’ Figlioli, Sr.


Thomas Gerald “Tom” Figlioli, Sr., 92, of Meriden and Old Saybrook, husband of the late beautiful and beloved Mary A. (Jaworski) Figlioli, who died in 1998 and to whom he was married for 44 years, died peacefully of natural causes in hospice care at Midstate Medical Center in Meriden on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023.

Tom was born in Meriden on May 21, 1930. He was the ninth and youngest child of Gerardo, a shoemaker, and Filomena (Russillo) Figlioli, a homemaker, who emigrated to Connecticut in 1907 from Picerno, Basilicata, Italy. Before his retirement in the 1990s, he was chief of the materials control laboratory at United Technologies’ Pratt & Whitney Aircraft division in East Hartford. During his 40-year career there, Tom ensured the chemical and metallurgical quality of the company’s engines for commercial jets, including the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and DC10 aircraft, and the Boeing 727, 737, and 747 aircraft, and for the U.S. military F-14, F-15, and F-16 fighters.

Prior to joining Pratt & Whitney, Tom was honorably discharged at the rank of first lieutenant from the U.S. Air Force after stateside active duty during the Korean War. He graduated from Fordham University and completed its Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1951 with a bachelor’s in chemistry. He was a 1947 graduate of Meriden High School.

Tom leaves his daughters, Lisa Figlioli and her husband Bruce Miller of Greenwich and Laura (Figlioli) Crevier and her husband Ronald Crevier of Southington, and his son, Thomas, Jr. and his wife Kathleen (McAleer) Figlioli of Haddonfield, New Jersey. He is also survived by his great-granddaughter, Sienna Keller of Tinton Falls, New Jersey.; and his six grandchildren, Paul Crevier and his wife Katie (Hynes) of Milford, Erica (Crevier) Keller and her husband Chris of Tinton Falls, Jonathan Crevier of New York City, Michael Miller of Greenwich, and Grace Figlioli and Nicholas Figlioli of Haddonfield. Swanhild Steffensen, a longtime friend formerly of Danbury, also survives him, as do many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his eight siblings, Angela, Aldo, Clementina, Adelina, Bianca, Ida, Sylvia, and Beatrice.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church where Tom was a lifelong parishioner. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
