Florence ‘Flo’ Dutka

Florence “Flo” Dutka was born in Essex in 1923, where she resided her entire life. She was the daughter of Joseph and Florence (Hein) Garrity.

Florence married Walter Dutka in 1943 and had a long marriage lasting almost 50 years. She was predeceased by Walter in 1993; by her eldest son Michael in 2003; son Alan in 2013; and brother Joseph Garrity in 2014.

She is survived by her grandson Shane Dutka and wife Terri of Moodus; granddaughters Kimberly Ensminger and family of Panama City, Florida; and Michele Grogan and family in Clarksville, Tennessee. Florence has six great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Florence worked for many years at the Essex National Bank and a few years at the Bankers Trust, both in Essex. She had always shown an interest in local politics and was on the Board of Selectman for a short time. Florence also worked as an assistant town clerk in Essex for over six years.

Florence was a communicant for over 90 years at “Our Lady of Sorrows” in Essex and was an active member from high school through her death. After Walter’s death, she became active in the American Legion and was a member of the Woman’s Auxiliary for 17 years. Florence will be dearly missed by her family and friends. As Flo has said, “She learned how to play piano and knit but did not get kudos/credit for either one because she wasn’t much good at them.”

A Mass was held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church followed by a Burial at Resurrection Cemetery. Arrangements by the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, Centerbrook.
