John Walter Greenman

John Walter Greenman, 86, of New York City and Guilford, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Dec. 30.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Storms Greenman; his daughter, Catherine Greenman D’Albert, his son-in-law, Richard D’Albert; and his son, Edward Greenman, all of New York City. He was the loving grandfather of Peter, Nate, Henry, and Josephine D’Albert. A brother, James Greenman, predeceased him.

A towering presence with a commanding voice, John was a hilarious raconteur and a compassionate listener. He enjoyed a long career as a college textbook editor at HarperCollins Publishers in New York City. During his retirement, he packed his time with many pursuits — cooking, reading, needlepointing, and drawing. He also had a prolific “side gig” as a crossword puzzle writer for the New York Times and People Magazine. He loved his years interacting with people as a volunteer at Weill Cornell-NY Presbyterian Hospital and he was an ardent theater goer.

John was born in April 16, 1936, in Binghamton, New York to Francis Greenman, a veterinarian, and Mary Franey, a librarian. He grew up in Deposit, New York, and had many beloved cousins, aunts, and uncles in nearby Binghamton. He graduated from Hamilton College. John will be remembered for the support he gave to his family and friends, his keen wit and his love of a good story.
