Maria S. Spalding


Maria S. Spalding, longtime resident of Guilford, passed away peacefully at Artis Senior Living of Branford on Aug. 29 with her husband David by her side. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Florence Savelli; and her brother Joseph. Maria was born Aug. 9, 1955, in Poughkeepsie, New York and grew up in Wappingers Falls, New York.

She attended St. Mary’s School in Wappingers Falls and Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie. She earned her Associate’s degree in nursing at Dutchess Community College and became a Registered Nurse, before returning to school to earn her Bachelor of Science in nursing at Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. While attending college, she met Dave, and they were married shortly after graduation and moved to Connecticut.

Maria worked as a nurse at the St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, New Haven Visiting Nurses, then again at St. Rafael’s in discharge planning. While working full time, she attended law school at night, graduating from the University of Bridgeport School of Law. She practiced professional malpractice defense for Cotter, Cotter & Sohan, then Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, and she retired from Bai, Pollock, Blueweiss & Mulcahey in 2007.

Besides her husband, she is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, godchildren and friends who love her and miss her.

A celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later date. Donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
