Louise M. Worrell

Beloved wife, mother, sister, cherished friend, and talented teacher, Louise “Lulu” M. Worrell, passed away on the morning of Oct. 20 at Smilow Cancer Hospital. Louise is survived by Gil, her husband of 54 years and their dog Hunter; her sisters, Marie (Richard) Walston, Kim (Jeremy) Kezer; and brother Andrew (Linda) Dangelo; three nieces, three nephews, four great-nieces, and four great-nephews; life-long friends, Tim and Eileen Gannon; Jen, Sarah, Jill, and Cassey, whom she loved as her own; and many wonderful friends. She was predeceased by her son Jeremy A. Worrell; parents, Andrew and Mary Dangelo; and nephew Brian Walston.

Louise graduated from Guilford High School. She played the clarinet in the high school band as well as played on the school’s softball team. She also was a Girl Scout.

Louise then went on to receive three degrees from Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU): a bachelor’s in education; a master’s in education; and a sixth-year teaching degree.

Upon graduating from SCSU in 1971, she began her 45-year teaching career in the Guilford Public School System. In 1972, she taught 4th grade for 6 years at Calvin Leete School. In 1978, she went on to become a second-grade teacher at Guilford Lakes School. Louise and Dawn Breakey, a dear friend and colleague, pioneered the first multi-age program at Guilford Lakes from 1997 to 2013. Louise retired from the Guilford Public Schools in 2017. In her retirement, she went on to become an educational instructor at Middletown Adult education where she instructed adults working toward earning their High School Credentials. She was respected by fellow teachers and adored by her students, many of which were motivated to come each day just to spend time with Louise.

Louise was a beloved teacher and earned the respect and admiration of everyone she encountered throughout the school district and beyond. She will be remembered dearly by all the students, parents and colleagues lives she touched during her long and outstanding career.

She and Gil lived in Durham prior to building their forever home in Killingworth. Together they both enjoyed showing their Irish Setters in conformation dog shows. She and her husband frequently visited Crested Butte, Colorado, to spend time with their son and friends hiking the mountains and enjoying the wildflowers.

Charlestown Beach in Rhode Island is a special family place in her childhood and again in her retirement. She enjoyed spending time walking her dog, reading books and enjoying the sights and sounds of the ocean.

Lulu loved to play games, but was a poor sport when she lost and has been known to flip a board or two if the game was not going her way. She had a love of word games and holidays always consisted of a family game or two of scrabble. She and her sister had regular scrabble games on their phones every night.

Ever since she was four years old, Lulu has been known to sneak cookies when everyone else had gone to bed. She would always say “I just need a little something-something” and always had a “chewy” nearby to satisfy her. Louise was a very stylish and classy dresser. Whether she was teaching, socializing or even cleaning, her outfits were always well put together and fashionable.

Louise enjoyed talking to and learning about people she became friends with. She was always patient, never passed judgment and always saw the good in everyone. Her passing leaves a huge void in all of our lives but she will forever live in our memories that we share together with family and friends. Her final words were, “I will send you all feathers from Heaven”.

Louise requested that we celebrate her life in the spring of 2023 with her family and closest friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Louise Worrell Memorial Fund for a lasting gift for the Guilford Lakes School in memory of Mrs. Worrell.
