08/25/2022 12:00 PMAnna Jennifer (Rehnberg) McCann, 69 years old, of Old Saybrook, passed away on August 18 in Old Saybrook. Jennifer was born in Larchmont, New York to Harry and Metta Rehnberg on Dec. 2, 1952.
She went to school at Mamaroneck High School, Class of 1970, and on to graduate from the University of New Hampshire, B.S. in zoology (1982), Antioch University New England, M.S. in environmental science (1996), Purdue University Global, B.S. in nutrition (2020) magna cum laude; and obtained the HNCB certification as a holistic nutrition therapy provider.
Jennifer worked tirelessly to maintain the historical and environmental beauty of the Connecticut River Valley, both restoring the E.E. Dickinson Co. factory into Witch Hazel Works in Essex, and publishing a non-profit guidebook to the Connecticut River’s coves and marshes, using proceeds to benefit the CT River Watershed Council.
An avid gardener, mother of three, and grandmother of six, Jennifer pursued her interests with optimistic drive and a goal of communal wellness. She had held board member positions with the CT River Museum and CT River Watershed Council and the Lynde Point Land Trust; served as treasurer for the Borough of Fenwick, as well as being a founding member of the Acumen Fund, a non-profit organization investing in social-living solutions worldwide.
Jennifer is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Metta Rehnberg; and her granddaughter Elisa Rose McCann. Jennifer is survived by her three children, Dagan, Carolyn and Douglas; her brothers, Jon and Christopher; and sister Stephanie; and her five grandchildren: Hayden, Lilly, Greta, Stella, and Brody.
In lieu of a funeral, the family will be having a private Celebration of Life to honor the memory of their mother.
