08/18/2022 10:30 AMMadeleine Rose Egan, 93, of Mystic and formerly of Madison, passed away Aug. 9 at StoneRidge Assisted Living Center in Mystic. She was born Jan. 9, 1929 in Worcester, Massachusetts, the daughter of Gustave and Jenny (Garceau) Bourdelais. Madeleine was married to James Timothy Egan, who passed away in 1985.
Her daughters, Pamela Egan and Patricia Plunkett; and her two grandchildren, Katharine Sawyer and James Plunkett, survive Madeleine.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at St. Margaret Church, 24 Academy Street, Madison; a Celebration of Life reception will follow.
Madeleine’s career was defined by her lifelong commitment to nursing, which she truly loved. She earned her RN in nursing from Burbank Hospital and served as a head-operating nurse for many years in Leominster, Mass. It was not uncommon for her to have her two daughters in the viewing room of a surgery while she worked; so that they could gain an appreciation for her vocation from a young age. She later served as the head nurse at Fowler’s Nursing Home in Madison.
She was also an accomplished pianist and had a devout love of gardening. Despite her family’s protests, she could often be found meticulously weeding, planting flowers, or even mowing her lawn well into her 80s. She was perhaps most at peace in her gardens at her home on Partridge Lane, strolling the grounds, plucking errant dandelions as the summer dusk settled in the sky.
There are no calling hours and Interment will be private.
