Stephen Rider “Steve” Allen

Stephen passed away peacefully at Branford Hospice with family by his side on June 19 after a brave battle with brain cancer. Steve was born in January 1945 and grew up in West Haven and Milford, where he graduated from Milford Academy in 1963.

Steve went on to Suffolk University in Boston where he earned a degree in business. He then joined the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served in the Reserves until 1972. Designing and building custom homes was how Steve spent the bulk of his career. His work spanned the Connecticut shoreline as well as Rhode Island, the Cape, and Nantucket. He also held a real estate license and worked as a broker for Century 21 in Branford for several years. He had many fond memories of all the people he worked with along the way.

Steve loved the outdoors and enjoyed traveling, camping, hiking, sailing and skiing with family and friends. He loved animals and had Labrador dogs most of his life. Later in life, walking became his daily passion. In his down time, he was an avid reader and enjoyed a good book and a glass of red wine in his favorite chair. Steve had an easy-going nature that endeared him to many. Above all, he loved his family and cherished the time he was able to spend with them.

Steve was predeceased by his loving parents, Mavis and Roscoe Allen of Cape Cod, and Branford; and his brother John Allen of Branford. Steve is survived by his children, Christopher Allen of Branford, Shena Allen of Pleasant Hill, California, and Casey Allen of Branford; and grandchildren, Cailin and Rider Wilson of Pleasant Hill, California.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 20, at the First Congregational Church in Guilford. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Branford Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
