James D. Keating


Old Saybrook

James D. “Jim” Keating, 80 years old, of Old Saybrook, passed away July 11. Jim was born in Hartford to Adrian F. Keating and Margaret (Maroney) Keating Aug. 1, 1941.

He graduated from Saint Augustine Elementary School (1955) and Morgan G. Bulkeley High School (1959) in Hartford. Jim married Salvatrice (Farinella) Keating June 15, 1963 in Hartford. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering degree. In 1965, he graduated from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, with a Master of Business Administration degree. In 1963, Jim was hired as an engineer by the Norden Company. After one year, Jim took a leave of absence to pursue his MBA. In 1965, Jim was hired by International Business Machines (IBM) as a sales executive. He worked for IBM for 44 years. For many years, Jim served as a volunteer in several Old Saybrook organizations. These include the Old Saybrook Economic Development Commission, moderator of the District 1 polling location for local and national elections, and serving lunch for the Old Saybrook Soup Kitchen in Centerbrook.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Adrian and Margaret Keating; his grandparents, Daniel and Margaret Keating and James and Johanna Maroney; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jim is survived by his wife Sally; daughters, Meg Kolb (John) of Old Lyme, Michele Vecchitto (Mark) of Niantic, Melissa Molnar (Mark) of Hazleton, Pa., and Maureen Leach (Carl) of East Haddam; brothers William Keating (Carol) of Hampton, N.H., and Adrian F. Keating Jr. (Deborah Ellis) of West Hartford; brother-in-law Salvatore T. Farinella (Judith); former son-in-law Daniel Messina; grandchildren: Sean, Emma, James, and Maeve Kolb; Alison, Mary-Kate, and Jack Messina; Maryellen, Colleen, Sarah, and Ryan Molnar; Jacob, Joseph, Logan, and Robert Leach; and many cousins; and lifelong friends.

Final viewing was on July 19, at the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook. A funeral Mass was celebrated by Father Greg (Grzegorz) Brozonowicz and Father Joe (Joseph) Ashe, July 20, at Saint John Roman Catholic Church, 161 Main Street, Old Saybrook. Burial followed at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, 1 Cottage Grove Road, Bloomfield. Arrangements are by the Swan Funeral Home in Old Saybrook. Memorials may be given to the Smilow Cancer Center, Waterford, CT, Saint John School, Old Saybrook, CT, Saint John and Saint Mark Food Pantry, Westbrook, CT, or Old Saybrook Food Pantry, Old Saybrook, CT.
