Essex

Kimball Sumner Nickerson of Wellington, Florida, and Essex, Connecticut, died peacefully on May 26 at Courtyard Gardens, Boynton Beach, Florida, from complications due to Parkinson’s disease. He had just passed his 80th birthday.

Kimball was born in New York City on May 12, 1942, the only child of parents, Kimball Franklin and Genevieve (née Hatch) Nickerson, and grew up in Old Saybrook.

Kimball was an entrepreneur with many ventures who lived life on his own terms. He was a man of many and varied interests, but playing and watching polo were particular passions of Kimball’s. Later in life he became especially interested in organizations that bring horses together to empower youth and work with children with developmental issues, as well as organizations that train young polo players.

Before COVID prevented it in 2020, Kimball liked to spend his winters in Wellington, Florida, then travel in the spring to Orlean, Virginia, up to Pennsylvania, then to Newport, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and up to Maine, then reversing the route back to Florida in the fall, visiting family and friends along the way, particularly his home in Essex.

Kimball’s family and friends wish to express our deep appreciation for the compassionate and skillful care Kimball received in the last weeks of his life from Trustbridge Hospice and Courtyard Gardens.

Per Kimball’s wishes, his ashes will be dispersed at the Thread of Life, South Bristol, Maine.

Kimball is survived and remembered fondly by his four cousins, The Rev. Martha Kirkpatrick of Wilmington, Delaware; Alice Kirkpatrick of Pownal, Maine; Andrew Graham of Austin, Texas; and Dr. George Graham of Boston, Massachusetts.

If friends wish to give in honor of Kimball’s memory, donations to the following organizations would be most welcome: Trustbridge, Hospice of Palm Beach County https://trustbridge.com; High Hopes Therapeutic Riding, Inc., in Old Lyme, CT https://highhopestr.org/; or the Polo Training Foundation, Wellington, FL — https://polotraining.org.
