Old Saybrook

Theresa Marie Shuttleworth (née Theresa Grublelich), a longtime resident of Old Saybrook, passed away on May 4 at age 97. Known to her family and friends as Terry, she was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Jersey City, New Jersey. She grew up in North Bergen, New Jersey, with her three brothers, Matty, Tony, and Greg.

In 1949, Terry married Walter F. Shuttleworth (deceased). They lived in Old Greenwich, where they raised their son, Richard C. Shuttleworth (deceased) and their daughter Kathi S. Bletz. Terry worked as a clerk in the Tax Assessor’s Office for the Town of Greenwich and in 1981 she and Walter retired to Old Saybrook.

Terry will be remembered for her many years of volunteering for organizations including The Women’s Club of Old of Saybrook, Old Saybrook Congregational Church, and the Vintage Players. She was a dedicated member of the Woman’s Club for 21 years and the club’s president from 1998 to 2000. She was particularly active in the music group and the club’s scholarship program. Through the congregational church she participated in the crafters group for 25 years, the Heat and Eat program for 13 years, and the contributed to the Tower newsletter for 20 years. Terry was an avid reader, gardener, and music lover, especially of opera.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed. She is survived by her daughter, Kathi S. Bletz (Michael Bletz) of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; grandchildren Claire B. Wolf (Michael Wolf), Jason Shuttleworth (Jennifer Penna), and Molly C. Bletz; and great-grandchildren Lana and Jasper Wolf. She will be remembered fondly by her sister-in-law Josephine Grubelich and many caring nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.

A memorial service was held on May 14 in the Swan Funeral Home, Old Saybrook. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Acton Public Library (https://www.actonlibrary.org/) or the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Center (https://www.katharinehepburntheater.org/).
