Annie MacDonald, 70, passed away peacefully at Yale New Haven Hospital on May 4. Annie was born in Philadelphia. Her parents were George and Phoebe Widmer, and she inherited their sense of style, sophistication, and comedic whit.
Growing up on the Main Line and a child of the ‘60s, she celebrated many events of that decade, including attending a concert by the Beatles in 1965 and Woodstock in 1969. She received a bachelor’s degree in theater design from Goddard College in 1975 and soon after married her college sweetheart, David Mauldin. She and David moved in 1978 to Middletown, where she began to work at Oddfellows Playhouse, a newly organized youth theater group. She remained employed with various local theater groups until leaving for Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 1988 where she pursued her lifelong passion for horses, training them to compete in barrel racing and dressage. She returned to Guilford in 2008.
Annie was a richly talented artist and energetic craftsperson with a unique sense of style, always interested in exploring new ideas and tackling new projects. Among her adventures, she renovated several homes, often doing the labor, carpentry, and painting herself. In later life, Annie took up gardening with a passion, creating beautiful landscapes and quirky art displays while volunteering for the Leetes Island Gardening Club in Guilford.
Annie’s companion Jim Daily of Westbrook was a special presence in the last years of her life with whom she enjoyed traveling to fun and warm climates. Jim brought great happiness and joy to her.
She is survived by her brother Christopher Widmer and his wife Willa Williams of Guilford, her cousins Susan and Bruce Beaudette of Newcastle, Maine, and the many people whose lives she touched over the years trudging the road of happy destiny.
She was a quirky, wonderful, and unpredictable person who was loved and will be greatly missed. RIP.
A celebration of her life is planned for later this summer at a time and place to be announced.
