Branford

Florence “Flip” Fortune of Branford died peacefully in her home on May 19. She was the wife of the late William E. Fortune. Flip was born in New York City on Sept. 26, 1927, a daughter of the late Harry and Elsie Hirschfield Hughes.

She was an elementary school teacher in Branford, an active parishioner at St. Mary Church in Branford, and a CCD teacher for more than 35 years. She was an active volunteer who brought joy to the community. Flip had a wonderful sense of humor and will be remembered for her bright smile and her love of children.

Flip is survived by her children William Fortune, Robert Fortune, and Nancy Leta, all of Branford; her sister Barbara Craig of Holden, Massachusetts; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her children Thomas and Jane Fortune.

Friends visited on May 22 in the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, Branford. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on May 23 in St. John Bosco Parish at St. Mary Church, Branford. For her online memorial, see www.wsclancy.com.
