Barbara de Bruyn, 93, of Guilford, died peacefully in her sleep on May 11 at her home in Guilford.

She was the loving wife of Marius de Bruyn, deceased. She is survived by her daughter Paige and her sons Thomas, Peter, Gray, Evan, and Eric. She is also survived by her grandchildren Alexander, Mary, William, Jack, Lauren, Adam, Rachel, and Hannah.

Barbara, or “Bobbie” as she was known to everyone, grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and Bellport, Long Island, along with her younger brother Theodore. She attended The Packard School in Brooklyn and got her college degree from Stephens College in Missouri.

Bobbie married Michael Joseph Sobran in 1952, and they made their homes first in Michigan, and then later Sturbridge, Massachusetts, before moving to Woodbridge and before settling down in Old Greenwich.

They had a total of eight children. Alexander died at the age of three, and Todd lived until the age of 35 and was well known throughout Greenwich. Michael and Barbara eventually divorced. Barbara subsequently met and married David Kligerman of Stamford. They were married for 18 years before his passing in 2005. David is survived by his daughter Joan Lynn and his son Robert and his wife Dana Kligerman and their children Land, Parker, Bard, and Madeline. All were very close with Bobbie.

Bobbie always maintained a close friendship with Marius de Bruyn from their years growing up in Brooklyn. Marius was a widower, and in time, Bobbie and Marius reconnected again and subsequently married. They lived in both Guilford and Fort Meyers, Florida. Bobbie loved to travel and visited Machu Pichu, Egypt, China, and Alaska, among many other places. Marius is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Brett and Peggy de Bruyn.

Bobbie was much loved for her positive attitude and her love of good conversation. She kept active after retiring from real estate and volunteered doing hospice for 20 years in Florida, and was active with the garden club and volunteering at The Hole in the Wall in Guilford. She had a wide range of much loved friends who will miss her keen sense of humor and her positive outlook.

Her family is grateful for the love she showed and her high level of energy to the very end. She was living on her own at 93, still driving, and took a nice walk Wednesday evening before laying down to sleep.

In lieu of flowers, and to best honor Bobbie’s positive spirit, her family asks all of us to keep her tradition alive of being positive to those we know and love.

A service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, at Christ Episcopal Church, 11 Park Street in Guilford.
