Branford

Phylis R. Johnson, 93, of Branford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on April 20, after a brief illness. Phylis was born Oct. 8, 1928, in New Haven, the daughter of the late Herbert and Marian Lamb Rowley. She was the wife the late Kenneth G. Johnson Sr. for 46 years. She worked at SNET for 25 years until retiring.

Phylis enjoyed traveling, which included trips to Europe, family cruises, and RV trip along the East Coast. She was an avid gardener who loved having fresh-cut flowers in her home. She enjoyed her daily afternoon tea while watching the birds at the feeder. Phylis looked forward to get-togethers with a group of lifelong friends who, later in life, referred to themselves as the “80s Ladies,” which then turned into the “Nifty 90s.”

Phylis was the pillar of her family whose door was always open. One of her greatest qualities was her ability to relate to all generations. Her sharp mind allowed her to stay up-to-date on current events and technology. Phylis was an amazing woman who will be greatly missed. Family was the focus of her life.

She is survived by her children, Cynthia (Joseph) Fitteron of West Haven, Kenneth G. Johnson, Jr., Douglas P. (Jennifer) Johnson, and Christine J. Daley, all of Branford. She was “Gram” to her grandchildren: Shannon (Christopher) Menihan, Megan (Jeffrey) Padden, and Timothy and Lauren Johnson. She was “Gigi” to her great-grandson, Jaxson Edward Padden, who always brought a smile to her face. She was predeceased by her sons-in-law Edward O’Donnell and Terrence Daley, her brothers Donald and Robert Rowley, and her sister Marian Condie.

Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning, April 28, in Tabor Cemetery, Branford. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Branford Garden Club, c/o the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc., P.O. Box 854, Branford, CT 06405.
