Madison

Catherine (Tierney) Cosgriff passed to her eternal rest surrounded by her loving family at home on April 16. Catherine “Kay” was born in Norwalk on April 24, 1935, daughter of the late Michael James Tierney and Marie (Basta) Tierney. Kay, a longtime resident of Madison, was predeceased by her loving husband Thomas M. “Teg” Cosgriff Jr.

Kay graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford, and then attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Waterbury. Kay had a long career as a registered nurse and especially loved caring for the elderly. Kay worked for Fowler Nursing Home, Watrous Nursing Home, and the VNA of Madison. Kay and Teg moved their young family to Madison in 1968, at Seaview Beach, where every day was a beach vacation and lasting memories were built. Kay became active in the Madison community over the past 54 years, serving as president of the Women’s Club of Madison, past member of the St. Margaret’s Women’s Guild, and a catechist teacher. Kay also was an active parent in the Our Lady of Mercy School community, and later became a member of St. Mary’s Church of the Visitation in Clinton, where she volunteered and made many wonderful friends with whom she enjoyed spending time.

In her spare time, Kay enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles, and baking. Kay was famous for her cheesecake, and her grandchildren loved her homemade cranberry sauce at the holidays. Her favorite pastime, however, was the time she spent with her five grandchildren.

Kay is survived by her son Teg Cosgriff III (Sue) of Madison, daughter Cate Lyman (George) of Watertown, and her grandchildren Teg Cosgriff IV, Brad Cosgriff, Clay Cosgriff, George Lyman, Jr., and Claire Lyman. She was predeceased by her sister Marie and brothers Joseph, James, Thomas, and John. In addition, she is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families whom she adored.

Friends are invited to calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, in St. Mary’s Church of the Visitation, 54 Grove Street, Clinton. Burial will follow Mass at West Cemetery, 71 Jannas Lane, Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Kay’s name may be to St. Mary’s Church of the Visitation, 54 Grove St, Clinton, CT 06413.
