Guilford

Paul Brouard, professor, Yale School of Architecture, and practicing architect, died peacefully at his home in Guilford on April 3. His wife of 44 years, Linda, was at his side. He was 92.

Paul was predeceased by a daughter, Beata, and son, Kai. He is survived by his son Peter (Pam), two grandsons, and a niece and nephew.

In addition to family and friends, Paul will be deeply missed by former students of the Yale School of Architecture who regarded him as a friend, mentor, and role model in life as well as profession.

Paul was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 2, 1929. He received a B.A. from St. Lawrence University and an M.Arch from Yale University.

As director of the first year Building Project, Paul worked for 40 years with more than 2,000 students in the studio and the field to service the community by building housing, camp structures, clinics, and town gathering spaces. His demeanor and commitment to the pedagogy of design build allowed students to learn by doing, thus fostering discovery, growth, and compassion.

Paul was a gentle man who had an aesthetic approach to life. He was rugged, down to earth, most at home in nature, and committed to the task at hand. Whether he was on a job site, working stone on his property, tending his vegetable garden, or cooking, he met each project with energy, humor, patience, and a reservoir of creativity. He was attentive and respectful in his personal relationships and was loved deeply.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.

A fund is being established in Paul’s name to acknowledge students who embody Paul’s humanity.
