Essex

Doris Ann Brunschwig Peake, 87, resident of Essex, died on Jan. 20, 2022.

She is survived by three of her children, Pierre Joseph Brunschwig (wife Polly), Joseph Friend Brunschwig (wife Suzanne), and Anna Keturah (Turie) Norman, and her five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her oldest son, Jean Edgar Brunschwig, and survived be her daughter-in-law Jodi.

Doris was born in 1934 in Atwood, Illinois. She was raised on the farm of her parents, Ruth and Ralph Cordts, until she left for Southern Illinois College. She did her junior year at Pembroke women’s college of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, where she met her first husband and father of her four children, Frederick Samuel Brunschwig.

She and Fred first lived in Champagne, Illinois, and then moved to Vashon Island, Washington, where she raised her family with Fred for eight years and then moved to Old Saybrook. After her first husband’s death, she moved to Essex, where she met her second husband, Cameron H. Peake.

Doris was known for her laughter and generous spirit, good friends, and strong family ties. She worked as a substitute teacher in the Old Saybrook school system for many years and a store clerk at the Silk Worm in Essex, where she dressed women and made them look beautiful.

Her memorial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, in Old Saybrook at the First Church of Christ in Old Saybrook (Congregational), 366 Main Street, Old Saybrook.
