Lawrence M. Noble, Jr., of Guilford passed away peacefully on Feb. 21 at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his second wife, Joanna L. Noble, and his first wife and mother of his three children, Helen R. Noble.

Mr. Noble was born in New Haven on March 28, 1931. He graduated from St. Paul’s School in 1948 and spent the following year at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Yale University in 1953 and then joined the United States Marine Corps. He received his commission as a lieutenant in 1954 and was stationed in Cherry Point and Edenton, North Carolina as an air control officer, with a stint as an air control instructor on a U.S. Navy submarine.

Mr. Noble joined Aluminium Ltd. in 1956, and attended the company’s International Management Institute in Geneva, Switzerland. He received a business degree a year later and was sent to the company’s affiliate in New York City, Aluminium Ltd. Sales, Inc. He worked in sales until 1962, when he left to attend the Harvard Business School.

After business school, Mr. Noble was employed by Yale University for 18 years as associate director of admissions, director of financial aid, and associate secretary of the university. In 1981, he founded an educational counseling practice in New Haven, advising students and their families on admission to secondary schools and colleges. In 1996, he retired to concentrate on writing.

Mr. Noble’s primary interest was his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Joanna, with whom he had a very special and loving relationship. He was also a devoted husband to his first wife, Helen, prior to her death in 1995. In addition, he was very close to his children and their families. They had many reunions over the years in Vermont, Connecticut, and at their summer home in Northport Point, Michigan.

Mr. Noble’s outside interests included sports, in particular ice hockey (Yale Hockey captain, 1953), skiing, golf, tennis, and sailing. He was also an avid reader and writer of short stories during the latter part of his life. He and his wife Joanna were frequent travelers and theater goers, and they loved watching classic movies. He was a trustee of many educational institutions and organizations, including Foote School, Westminster School, and Suffield Academy. He was also secretary-treasurer of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and a fellow of Saybrook College at Yale. Memberships included the Yale Clubs of New York and New Haven, the Yale Hockey Association, and the Northport Point Club in Northport, Michigan.

Mr. Noble is survived by his sister Alexandra Heller of Morrisville, Vermont, and his brother David Noble of Santa Fe, New Mexico (Ruth). He was predeceased by his sister Louisa Drury of Stowe, Vermont. He leaves three children, Lawrence R. Noble (Sandy) of West Norwalk, Holly N. O’Brien (Nick) of Reading, Vermont, and Daniel S. Noble (Elizabeth) of Woodstock, Vermont. In addition, he also leaves a stepdaughter Lisa Hansen (Danny) of Highland, New York. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
