East Haven

Warren “Ike” Shannon, 89, of East Haven, passed peacefully on March 4 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven. He was born to James and Edith (Benham) Shannon in Lincoln Park, Michigan, on Jan. 31, 1933.

He is survived by his six children: Denise Shannon of Wallingford, Bonnie Henson, Margaret Harding, Yvonne Shannon, Joseph Shannon and partner Donna Cretella of East Haven, and Mary Jo Greco of New Haven. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two brothers-in-law, Francis Ramos and Michael Ramos, as well as many nieces and nephews. Warren was predeceased by his parents, wife Rita (Ramos) Shannon, and five siblings.

Known by his friends as Ike, Mr. Shannon enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He spent most of his 20 years of service stationed stateside until his retirement achieving the rank of senior chief. After his Navy career, he worked at Bilco Doors and Technical Career Institute where he both taught and supervised the welding curriculum. In his spare time, he enjoyed his family, fishing, playing poker, bowling, reading, online shopping, and listening to music. He also dabbled in horse racing and even co-owned a racehorse for a brief time. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his dog around the U.S. He especially enjoyed trips to Michigan, to visit his boyhood home and relatives.

A graveside service with U.S. Navy military honors was held on March 10 in East Lawn Cemetery, East Haven. Funeral services were under the care of the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home, East Haven. A special “Thank you” goes to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the V.A. Hospital in West Haven, for all their kind and compassionate care.
