Pauline Elizabeth Greeney passed away peacefully at her home in Deep River Feb. 22 at the age of 97 with her dog Angel by her side. She was born June 14, 1925, Flag Day.

A longtime resident of Deep River, she graduated from Old Saybrook public schools. She worked at the New London Naval Submarine Base in Groton during the Second World War. Her husband Henry, who predeceased her, was in the Air Force. They married and settled in Deep River where they were very well respected in the community.

She and Henry operated a popular gas station in Old Saybrook. Together they also bought a fine dining restaurant on Route 1. They also had a little shop at the four corners at the center of Deep River, selling newspapers, candy, coffee, and assorted groceries. Pauline was never out of work and was always making many friends along the way. Pauline was the bookkeeper at the First National Grocery Store in Old Saybrook for many years. As of recent she worked at Walmart, where she was recognized with many awards. Pauline also worked at the Old Saybrook VFW Post 10153 where she contributed often with donations.

Her love for animals was very genuine; she often took in rescues, most recently her dogs Hope and Angel. Pauline was always up for an adventure, whether it be a trip up to Boston to visit Fenway Park to see her beloved Red Sox or to the dog races or casino where she always entered the doors with enthusiasm. The world became a special place for Pauline when she became aunt “Elsye” and great-aunt “Elyse” to many nieces and nephews. She was very involved, supportive, and interested in everything they were doing. She was also the primary caretaker through the aging process for her mother Louise, who also passed away at 97.

Pauline Greeney is survived by her siblings David Francis Dowd of New York, New York and Old Lyme, and Geraldine Louise Cathcart of Bedford, Massachusetts.

We all feel the loss of a Pauline, who was very strong until the very end. Thank you to the caregivers and hospital professionals that helped Pauline. She will be remembered fondly by all who knew her and yes, that is Dunkin Donut Coffee—three sugars and three creams. Sweet.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4, directly in Fountain Hill Cemetery, Deep River. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in to the ASPCA or donation of your choice.
