Walter L. Perkins, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, suddenly passed away on Feb. 3 at McLeod Health in Loris, South Carolina. Walter was a long-time resident of Deep River, who recently retired to his dream home with his wife Bonnie in South Carolina.

Walt was born in Ware, Massachusetts, on June 10, 1945, to Ray Orville Perkins and Angeline Vitello Perkins. His family moved to Connecticut a few years later prior to him starting 2nd grade. He graduated from Westbrook High School in 1963. In July of 1968, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served four years, ending his term in February 1971. During his time served, he gained the rank of sergeant while in Germany.

On June 15, 1974, he married the love of his life, Bonnie A. Kelsey of Deep River. They resided in town and went on to build their family home. A few years later they started their family and had two boys, Walter Cory Perkins and Anthony Kenn Perkins, for whom Walt had a deep love.

Walt had an avid love for racecars and spent many hours working on his own. In the early 1970s he raced his red, white, and blue 101 V8 modified racecar. He continued his love for cars through the years.

Walt was a well-known man in his community and knew someone everywhere he went. He coached many youth programs in the Tri-Town area including Peewee Football, Baseball and even refereed soccer. He was involved in the Boy Scout program with his boys and many of their friends, with whom he made a lifelong bond. He enjoyed family vacations, gatherings, and just simply spending time with his loved ones.

Walter L. Perkins is survived by his wife, Bonnie K. Perkins, as well as his sister Beverley Perkins O’Brien, brother Kenneth Perkins, son Walter Cory Perkins and his wife Ashley Perkins and their two children Reese and Walker, son Anthony Kenn Perkins and wife Courtney Perkins and their two children Camden and Sydney, and many people who love him dearly.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown. Friends may gather prior to the service from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will be held at the State Veterans’ Cemetery.
