Essex

Robert Kevin “Rich” Richardell, 84, of Essex and formerly of Old Saybrook, passed away peacefully on Feb. 5 in Chester. He was the beloved husband of MaryBeth (Lengyel) Richardell. He was born in New York City on May 13, 1937, the son of James and Cecilia (Kennedy) Richardell.

Rich was a graduate of Bayside High School, where he was a superb athlete excelling at football and ice hockey. He was a retired crane operator and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 15 in New York City.

Rich was an avid walker and exercised on a daily basis. He loved Italian foods, ice cream, and all kinds of sweets. Rich was a forever New York Giants and Yankees fan. He was a devoted communicant of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Essex.

Besides his wife Marybeth, he leaves his son Thomas Richardell of Ivoryton, his daughter Lynn Donnelly and her husband Joseph of Indianapolis, Indiana, and his eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Rich was predeceased in 2003 by his first wife, Patricia (McManus) Richardell. He was also predeceased by his son James Richardell and his daughter Jayne Richardell Afshar.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 14 Prospect Street in Essex. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery, North Main Street in Essex. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Rich’s name may be made to Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 14 Prospect Street in Essex, CT 06426. Arrangements are in the care of the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home in Centerbrook.
