We are sad to announce that on Jan. 23, Dale Carlson, 86, of Madison, born in New York City, NYy, passed away. Dale is survived by her sister Anne Ehrenkranz (Joel), her son Danny Bick Carlson (Gena), her daughter Hannah Bick Carlson Jurewicz (Michael), and her grandchildren Sam Carlson-Teasdale (Shelby), Malcolm Carlson-Teasdale, Chaney Bick Carlson-Bullock (Mikayla), Shannon Alexis Bick Carlson-Bullock, and Jacquelyn Sage Pesce Jurewicz. Dale adored her children, grandchildren, and the many black kitties she had over the years. She taught all of us to honor service as a life commitment. Dale was a friend of Bill’s for 43 years.

Author of more than 90 books, published in more than 20 languages and 14 countries, adult and juvenile, fiction and nonfiction, Dale Carlson received three ALA Notable Book Awards, the Christopher Award, the ForeWord Book of the Year Award, YALSA Nomination Quick Picks for Young Adults, New York Public Library Best Books for Teens, VOYA Honor Book. She wrote science, psychology, dialogue, and meditation books for young adults and general adult nonfiction. Among her titles are The Mountain of Truth (ALA Notable Book), The Human Apes (ALA Notable Book), Girls Are Equal Too ( ALA Notable Book), Where’s Your Head?: Psychology for Teenagers (Christopher Award, New York Public Library Best Books List), Stop the Pain: Teen Meditations (New York Public Library Best Books List), In and Out of Your Mind: Teen Science (International Book of the Month Club, New York Public Library Best Books List), Talk: Teen Art of Communication, Wildlife Care for Birds and Mammals, and Stop the Pain: Adult Meditations.

Dale lived and taught in the Far East: India, Indonesia, Nepal, China, and Japan. She taught writing here and abroad during part of each year. As a Save the Children sponsor, Dale frequently traveled to visit the children and their communities, bringing supplies and books to help the local schools in their villages.

Dale served as editor with the Krishnamurti Foundation in America (KFA), aiding in the development of the Krishnamurti archives, Complete Teachings of J. Krishnamurti (1933-1986), and creating two volumes for young adults, What Are You Doing with Your Life and Relationship: To Others, To the World. The former was described by the board of directors as an all-time bestseller for KFA, selling 10,000 copies within the first two weeks, opening up the teen market for future generations to learn about the teachings of Krishnamurti. Her volumes were sold in teen clothing stores along with more traditional book-selling venues.

In the late 1990s, Dale started an independent publishing company, Bick Publishing House, publishing more award-winning books. She also became a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. While rescuing wildlife, Dale wrote manuals for adults interested in helping local wildlife. Dale visited the orangutan rehabilitation and release program at Camp Leakey in Tanjung Puting in Kalimantan, Indonesia, so that she may hug an orangutan baby and contribute medical supplies and medicine for the camp.

Dale wished that we not hold burial services and to continue the work of healing the planet.
