Branford

John James Florio, 80, longtime resident of Branford, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family Jan. 11, 2022. He is predeceased and finally reunited in Heaven with the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Shaune (Lynch) Florio.

He was born July 13, 1941, in Danbury to the late Nathan Henry Florio and Lena (Giardiano) Florio. He leaves behind his sons, Jon “Fuzzy” (Amy) and Chad (Leslie). He will always be remembered as “Pop” to his grandchildren, Krystal (Steve) Pietruszka, Tyler Florio, Cayla Florio, and Nathan Florio. He was the proud great-grandfather to Jacob and Madyson Pietruszka.

He grew up in New Haven with his siblings Carl, Henry “Bubby”, Albert, William “Billy”, and Phyllis. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany from 1960 to 1965 until his honorable discharge. Upon his return, he helped his brothers run the family trucking company, Florio’s Express. After they sold the business, he began working for the Teamsters Tristate Local 443 at Interstate Freight Trucking in Danbury until retirement.

After marrying Shaune in 1963, they moved to Branford where they raised their family. They were true soulmates and inseparable from the moment they met. They enjoyed their summers boating and fishing at Kelsey’s Island and Green Island. They loved going to Mohegan Sun, traveling with friends, and spending time with family. John looked forward to watching the Patriots every Sunday and loved sitting at the garage with his buddies. He truly left a mark on everyone he met and will be missed dearly.

All services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center.
