Clinton

Donald Matthew Sours, born in Hartford on Aug. 21, 1967, transitioned to the next stage of his journey the evening of Dec. 26, 2021, following a long illness. Our Mr. Matt, all-around swell guy, takes his fishing pole with him as well as the blessings and good wishes of his family, friends, and acquaintances.

Matt leaves his son M. Riley Sours; his best friend and loving life partner Debbie Hawkins; his mother and stepfather Nancy and Walter Carlson; his brother Cameron Sours and wife Barbara; his nephews Alex, Collin, and Cameron Sours; his stepbrother Randall Carlson; his aunt Linda Roy; and Ohio cousins. He was predeceased by his father William C. Sours and his grandparents Donald and Maxine Sours and Leo and Ione Smith.

Matt graduated Westbrook High School and New England Culinary Institution. He had many talents and worked as a chef, owned a landscaping business, and worked for a pool company and a machine shop. His great joy was running the Truffles Bakery in Clinton. Matty was an outdoorsman, happiest fishing for hours in fresh or salt water. The first day of trout season was a special yearly event for him. At the seaside he was always on the lookout for fish, crabs, and clams, which he prepared and shared using his three Cs—catch, clean, cook.

He was a fine skier, gliding down the slopes at Pico and Killington in Vermont. His scuba license was earned in Long Island Sound on one of the coldest winter days possible. Oh how he loved any type of motorized vehicles, saving his lawn mowing money to buy his first go cart when he was 12 years old.

Our family will gather privately to mourn and grieve, to celebrate his life, to share memories, to love, to remember. He will rest easy and move gently with the ebb and flow of the sea when the waters have warmed with the seasons. We would like to express our appreciation and gratitude for the compassionate care he, and we, received on the 7th floor of Middlesex Hospital and to the palliative care nurses who came to his home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries, P.O. Box 804, Essex, CT 06426.
