Guilford

Nancy Jane Vinson Elderbaum, 81, of Guilford enjoyed a final drive around the Guilford Green to see the Christmas tree and to the Town Marina to watch the sparkling waters before passing away at peace on Dec. 9. She was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, on Feb. 5, 1940, and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1957. Her beloved husband Philip predeceased her in 2012; they were married in Lynnfield Center, Massachusetts in 1958.

She was the daughter of Roger and Ruth Whitcomb Vinson and was predeceased by her brother Walter Freeman Vinson. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Captain Jeffry Motter of Guilford; her two grandchildren, Jane and Philip Motter; her niece Jennifer Sarafin; and her dear companion of recent years, Leo Black.

She and Philip were co-owners of Guilford SAAB for 34 years. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Guilford and Leeteā€™s Island garden clubs, as well as a Friend of the Library; she was active on the Guilford Green Committee for many years and served her town and her country by volunteering at the polls. She loved her gardens and flowers, watching the hummingbirds, and keeping an eye out for bluebirds and was grateful in her final days for visits from the bald eagle perched over West River. Known for her style and generous spirit, she will be missed by those fortunate to have known her.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, at the First Congregational Church, 110 Broad Street, Guilford. Interment of ashes will take place privately after the service in the church Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford Garden Club, P.O. Box 608, Guilford, CT 06437. Arrangements are in the care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford. To share a memory or leave condolences, visit www.guilfordfuneralhome.com.
