Winthrop

Arthur C. Winschel of the Winthrop section of Deep River passed away on Nov. 5 with family by his side. Arthur was born in Winthrop on April 29, 1929, to William F. and Regina (Reese) Winschel.

He was a Korean War veteran of the United States Army and a member of Ibell-Jacobson-Smith Post #61 American Legion Deep River. He served as an American Legion Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines Fund representative for more than 62 years, was a member of LA SOCIÈTÈ des 40 hommes et 8 CHEVAUX, and was vice president of the Winthrop Cemetery Association for 39 years. He was also devoted member of the Winthrop Baptist Church.

Arthur was employed as a butcher for many independent markets along the shoreline. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time in his gardens, boating, bowling, and traveling with his family.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Valerie (Tower) Winschel; sister Alice Johnson and brother Kenneth Winschel, both of Deep River; his two sons, John P. Winschel of Weatogue and Matthew C. Winschel of Kingston, New York; four stepchildren, Louis R. Budney and Richelle E. Rowe, both of Westbrook, Christine E. Fayle of Deep River, and Jay H. Newcomb of Chester; and nine grandchildren.

A private service was held Nov. 12 at the Winthrop Cemetery in Deep River. A memorial contribution may be made to the Winthrop Baptist Church, 444 Winthrop Road, Deep River, CT 06417.
