North Guilford

Sister Mary Margaret Jones, O.P. (Nancy Elizabeth Jones), 85, died peacefully in the infirmary of the Monastery of Our Lady of Grace, North Guilford, on Nov. 9 after a long illness.

Sr. Mary Margaret was born in Durham, North Carolina, on May 10, 1936. She was educated through high school and was a convert to the Catholic faith. Sr. Mary Margaret attended art school, where her natural skills as a cartoonist were developed into a talent that served her the rest of her life. She worked as cook for a family-run restaurant where she learned the art of real southern cooking for large crowds.

Sr. Mary Margaret entered the monastery of Our Lady of Grace in 1975 and made solemn profession as a nun of the Order of Preachers on May 20, 1982, the Feast of the Ascension. In the monastery, she worked for many years in building maintenance, the print shop, and in the kitchen. Her artwork served the community in numerous ways and copies of her cartoons adorned cards in the monastery’s gift shop.

Sr. Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Bryant Wesley Jones and Virginia Dare Dorsett Jones. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Dru and Linda Thompson and son John, Terry Thompson, and James Thompson.

Her Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Nov. 13 in the monastery chapel, followed by interment in the monastery cemetery.
