Clinton

On Oct. 30, Peter Alan Neff, loving husband, brother, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 70. Peter was born in Greenwich on Nov. 11, 1950, son of Robert Luther Neff and Barbara Sanger Neff. The family eventually relocated to Stamford, where Peter enjoyed a classic New England childhood bolstered by summers in Chamberlain, Maine at the family cabin.

Peter graduated high school from Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, Maine and attended college at SCSU in New Haven, where he received a M.S. and B.S. in special education. While attending the university, he met and fell in love with Lynn Ann Kearns. The two wed in 1973 and remained married for the next 48 years until his passing. Professionally Peter launched a career as a special education teacher in Fairhaven Middle School before also educating students in other subjects such as science, math, and technology. After 33 years, Peter retired and began a second career as Public Works director in Clinton, where he served the town from 2008 to 2019.

Peter reveled in hosting family gatherings at the house in Maine, sharing stories with the “coffee club,” and walking through town where he always had a friendly smile for others. He was known to be quick with a joke, enjoyed snuggling with his grandkids, and was proud to pamper his bride.

In addition to his professional career, Peter served the town he loved so much in a variety of ways. A brief list includes: Municipal Building Committee (2008 to 2018), Police Commission (2008 to 2009), Board of Finance (1997 to 2006), Clinton Volunteer Fire Department Chief (1988 to 1991), Clinton Volunteer Fire Department (1979 to 1991). Other committees include the School Building Committees and Fire Headquarters Feasibility Committee, among others.

Peter is survived by his bride Lynn Kearns Neff of Clinton and Chamberlain, Maine; his daughter Heather Neff Famiglietti and her husband Mark Famiglietti of Fairfield; son Michael Patrick Neff of Clinton; and Uncle John and Aunt Helen Neff; brother Robert Neff (predeceased) and sister-in-law Maryann Zaremba of Augusta, Maine; sister Marcy Neff and her partner Sheila Amdur of Mansfield; sister Wesley Neff and Robert DesLauriers of Winterport; and brother-in-law John Kearns. His beloved grandchildren include Connor and Allie; adored nieces and nephews include Wesley, Jennifer, Kelly, Robyn, Nicole, Sean, Todd, and James.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, at Saint Mary’s Church of Visitation located at 54 Grove Street, Clinton, with Pastor Martha Epstein officiating. Following the service, the reception will be held at the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department at 35 East Main Street in Clinton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Clinton Volunteer Fire Department, Families Helping Families, or the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
