Guilford

Doreen Capezzone, 88, longtime resident of Guilford, passed away at Connecticut Hospice on Oct. 7. She was born Doreen Elna Thompson on June 7, 1933, in East Haven, daughter of the late Whitney J. Thompson and Mildred (Norton) Thompson.

Doreen graduated from Guilford High School, Class of ‘51. She was a cheerleader (with her future brother-in-law!) along with lifelong best friend Betty (Whiteman) Abel. After high school, Doreen worked for the phone company and The Cotton Shop on Boston Street and was a full time nanny for several families in Guilford. Doreen met Thomas, the love of her life, when she was his neighbor on Water Street at the age of 13. He used to tease her as she hung out the laundry! At that time in history, Connecticut Yankees were unwilling to accept Italian immigrants, but Doreen and Tom stayed true and married in 1955.

A good-hearted, friendly person, she and her husband were members of a hysterically funny social group called the “Knitten Kittens” that brought them joy all their lives. She loved watching UConn women’s basketball, New York Yankees, backyard birds, and her grandson Michael play baseball.

The Capezzone family of 12 children adopted Doreen as part of the extended family. Besides her husband of 66 years, she leaves behind two daughters, Susan Capezzone and Sharon Roughton and son-in-law Richard Roughton; a son, Thomas V. Capezzone II; a grandson, Michael T. Gell; and a brother, Donald N. Thompson, as well as nieces and nephews she loved very much. She was predeceased by four siblings, Jean Tomlinson, Catherine (Cappy) Bennett, an dWhitney and Duane Thompson.

A memorial service will be planned at a future date.
