Madison

Shirley K. Janssen, longtime resident of Madison, passed away on Sept. 14 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Mrs. Janssen was born in New Haven on May 20, 1927, the day Lindberg flew across the Atlantic, daughter of the late Dwight Henry Keeler and Ollidine Verne Barrett Keeler.

She was the loving mother of John (Jean) Janssen, Richard (June) Janssen, and Clifford (Raye) Janssen, all of Scipio Center, New York; Phil (Marilyn) Janssen of Madison; and the late Sandra (Ted) Dunn of Scipio Center, New York. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was the sister of Robert (Nancy) Keeler of East Haven and was predeceased by her sisters Carol (Dave) Bredbury and Joan Keeler, along with her longtime companion Robert Thomas.

Before retirement, Shirley had worked for the Shoreline Times and as a medical assistant for Dr. Johnson in Guilford. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, playing the organ, and researching her genealogy. Shirley had traced her family tree back to Mary Chilton, an orphan on the Mayflower, and Rodger Sherman, Harriett Beecher Stowe, and John Rodgers. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Madison.

The Janssen family would like to thank the staff at Guilford House for the loving care of Shirley.

Burial services will be held privately at West Cemetery, Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Madison Hose Co. P.O. Box 573 Madison, CT 065443.
