Deep River

Helen Kurek McNutt, 97, of Deep River passed away peacefully on Aug. 18. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jerry, whom she remembered every day for more than 25 years.

She was also predeceased by her four older brothers and four older sisters, who added many nieces and nephews to the family for Helen to love.

Helen worked for many years as a legal secretary and assistant for Gould, Larson, Rearden, Carr and Stanley in Essex. She also was also a judge of probate for several years in East Haddam before she was married and moved to Westbrook. Helen and Jerry also lived in North Carolina and Florida before she moved back permanently to Deep River.

Always faithful to her cocktail hour, gin on the rocks was her preferred drink. Her favorite food was anything with chocolate. Regardless of circumstances, when it was “a quarter to three”, she would break into song, singing her favorite, “One for My Baby” amusing anyone fortunate enough to hear her. She often was found at the kitchen table doing crossword puzzles or on the computer playing solitaire.

We will miss you so much, but we will always fondly remember you. You were someone special.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Aug. 24, at Saint Joseph’s Church, Chester. Burial followed in Fountain Hill Cemetery, High Street in Deep River.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Helen’s name may be made to Saint Joseph’s Church, 48 Middlesex Ave., Chester, CT 06412 or to the Deep River Ambulance Association, 284 Elm Street, Deep River, CT 06417.
