Andrew Masiukiewicz, 70, of Essex passed away unexpectedly on July 25, while visiting family in Poland.

Andrew was born March 29, 1951, in Poland to Irena and Wladyslaw Masiukiewicz. He was the beloved husband of Urszula Masiukiewicz of 33 years and a loving father to his son Arthur Masiukiewicz.

He completed his studies in chemistry and mathematics in Poland and immigrated to the United States in the early 1980s. After immigration he worked as a chemist and pursued his academic interest, discovering mechanisms of protein folding until his retirement.

Andrew moved to Essex 17 years ago. He enjoyed spending time with his family, bird watching, and observing nature. In his free time, he was also an avid bridge and chess player. He was a communicant at the St. Theresa of Calcutta Parish in Essex and was an active member of the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered as a gentle soul and a caring father and husband. He was devoted to his wife and son and dedicated his life to making their lives as good as they could ever be. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.

Andrew is survived by his wife and son, his brother Marek Masiukiewicz and his family, and his sister Barbara Borkiet and her family, as well as his extended family in the United States and Poland.

A Mass and Christian burial will be held Tuesday, Aug. 10. A memorial contribution in his memory can be made to the Connecticut Audubon Society at ctaudoborn.org or Knights of Columbus at St. Teresa of Calcutta, Essex CT 06426.
