Guilford

Virginia M. “Ginny” Horan, longtime Guilford resident, peacefully passed away on June 18, surrounded by her family, at Yale New Haven Hospital. Ginny was born on May 10, 1960, the daughter of the late William F. and Luella R. Horan.

She is survived by her loving siblings, John (Ellen) of Northford, William F. Horan, Jr. (Laura) of Austin, Texas, Carol (Robert) McKinley of Middletown, and Judy Horan Arellano (Felipe) of La Manzanilla, Jalisco, Mexico as well as nieces, Nicole, Brooke, Rhianna, and Sara.

Being born in an era when individuals with differing needs were not offered the same opportunities, her mother and family become fierce advocates for her and others, for inclusion into society. Ginny was a pioneer, breaking down many barriers, thus becoming a wonderful and respected member of her community. She was a graduate of Guilford High School as well as a parishioner of St. George Catholic Church.

Ginny participated in SARAH day programs, holding many independent and supported jobs over her years. Most recently, she transitioned to day services, volunteering at local non-profits. Her independence peaked when she moved from her family home and into SARAH Seneca Residential Services housing, living in her own apartment for many years. That transitioned into supervised living, most recently enjoying a beautiful home with her housemates Linda and Jossie in North Guilford. The family extends a special thank you to her caring staff and to house manager Kari Constantinople, always an advocate for Ginny.

Ginny was a competitive athlete, whether it was shooting hoops with John on Pearl Street, hitting the golf ball, swimming, or competing and excelling in numerous events at the Connecticut Special Olympics.

She enjoyed music, most notably The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and played the drums and guitar in her youth. She also was involved with various art projects and enjoyed painting, as well as spending many hours organizing her “paperwork.”

Guilford Funeral Home will oversee arrangements. Interment will be in St. George Cemetery. All services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to SARAH Seneca Residential Services, 15 NE Industrial Rd., Branford, CT. 06405.

Tribute Wall postings regarding Virginia would be appreciated.
