Branford

Bertha Kornienko of Branford passed away peacefully on June 5 at her home with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late Peter Kornienko. Bertha was born in Munich, Germany on Nov. 3, 1922, daughter of the late Wilhelm and Anna Rothkopf.

She met her husband in a POW camp in Germany and they were married after the war. She and her family emigrated from Munich directly to Branford in the early 1950s. She formerly worked at the MIF in Branford before becoming a devoted and loving mother, homemaker, and gardener. She could often be found tending to her many flower and vegetable gardens at her home. She was a devout member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Branford and had an unshakable faith.

She is survived by her daughters, to whom she was the finest example of unconditional love, Sonja Kornienko of Branford and Susanna (Albert) DeDomizio of Vero Beach, Florida; her grandson, Peter MacDonald; and many nieces and nephews in Germany. She was predeceased by her six siblings, all of Germany.

Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford, and may attend a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 11, in Branford Center Cemetery.
