Branford

John Albinger passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on May 29. John was born in New Haven April 22, 1937, to Lillian and John Albinger, Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Branford.

John served proudly in the United States Navy as an aviation boatswain’s mate, second class, aboard the U.S.S. Randolph. Upon his return home in 1959, John began his “first” career as a machinist for several area companies where he was able to apply his mathematical mindset and love of working with his hands.

John married his beloved wife Joan in 1964 and they remained together until her death in August 2020. Shortly after the birth of his only child, William, in 1967, and wanting to provide greater opportunities for his young family, John returned to school while in his 30s and ultimately obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Haven. He then began his “second” career in business, which culminated in his role as a vice president of manufacturing with the Miller Company in Meriden. John quickly earned the respect and admiration of both his office-based colleagues for his intellect and business acumen as well as the machinists and tradesmen who recognized him as one of their own.

John retired early due to the first of several serious medical episodes, all of which he overcame, often against long odds and to the amazement of family and medical professionals alike. It was then that he began his “third” and final career as a full-time retiree and grandfather to his cherished grandchildren, Isabel and Luke. It was this role that he enjoyed the most as it allowed him to bear witness to his grandchildren’s many accomplishments—academic, artistic, and athletic. John was a steady presence at each and every award night, play, school concert, and sporting event. John was an avid and skilled golfer who continued to play the game that he loved well into his 70s. He happily surrendered his clubs and all of his equipment to his grandson, Luke, only after age and various ailments prevented him from continuing to play at the level to which he had been accustomed. He loved all sports but none more than baseball and basketball and he enjoyed discussing with his friends and family members all of the latest happenings involving his favorite teams, the New York Yankees and UConn men’s and women’s basketball.

John was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Joan Albinger; and his sister, Jacqueline Tramontano. John is survived by his son, William Albinger,; his daughter-in-law, Jean; his grandchildren, Isabel and Luke; and several nieces and nephews. John’s family would like to thank his compassionate caregivers from Connecticut Hospice.

Family and friends are invited to meet and attend a graveside service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 5 at St. Agnes Cemetery, East Main Street (Route 1), Branford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Branford Land Trust, P.O. Box 254, Branford, CT 06405. Please see his online memorial at www.wsclancy.com.
