Harold E. “Hal” Vayo passed away peacefully on April 13 at his home in Madison at the age of 90. Hal was born in Utica, New York, on May 28, 1930, son of the late Harold E. and Lucie (Plante) Vayo, and grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts, and New Haven. He attended Saint Mary Academy in New Haven and was a Boys Nation delegate representing Connecticut in 1946. Hal graduated from Providence College with high honors in 1951. The following year, he married the love of his life, Joan Cassidy Vayo. From 1952 to 1954, Hal served with the U.S. Army in Korea as a public information officer, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. After his honorable military discharge, Hal was employed by General Electric from 1954 until 1987 as a manpower placement consultant, living in several locations including Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Carmel, Indiana, and Fairfield, before settling in Madison in 1995.

Hal was active in the Knights of Columbus and the Boy Scouts of America. He also volunteered at Catholic churches in several communities.

Hal was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan, in 2019; infant brother Robert (1929); and his sisters Jean Cull (1987), Janet Vayo (2016), and Barbara Vayo (2020). He is survived by brother Paul Vayo and his wife, Genia of Fairfax, Virginia; son Harry Vayo and his wife, Linda Woods of Waterville, Maine; son David Vayo and his wife, Marie-Susanne Langille of Bloomington, Illinois; daughter Paula (Vayo) Werne and her husband, Gary Werne of Ferdinand, Indiana; and son William Vayo and his wife, Barbara C. Gill-Vayo of White Plains, New York. Hal is also survived by seven grandchildren, Becky (Vayo) Sunseri; Andrew, Gordon, and Lucy Vayo; and Thomas, John, and James Werne, as well as great-grandsons Cameron Werne and Leo and Evan Sunseri.

The family plans a private funeral and burial. A public celebration of Hal Vayo’s life will be scheduled for later in the year.
