Joseph Michael “Mike” Biddle, 74, of Waterford was called home on March 30. A faithful husband, loving father/grandfather, and successful passionate educator, he will be missed by many.

Mike left behind his wife of 50 years, Bonnie Biddle, who was his best friend and soul mate. He is also survived by his oldest daughter Meredith and her husband Tim, and his youngest daughter Blythe and her husband Dave. His grandchildren Talia, Cassady, Zachary, Dylan, and Bella will carry him in their hearts. He will join his grandson Joseph on the other side.

Born in Greensburg, Indiana, Mike spent his youth in Hartsville and Columbus with his mother and father, Max Biddle and Mary Biddle-Western, and stepfather Harold Western, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his siblings Myra Biddle-McIntosh, Diana Biddle, and Bruce Biddle as well as his cousin Jeannie and her husband Jim Hunter for whom he held a special place in his heart. His brother Ronnie Biddle preceded him in death.

Mike attended Mulligan College and had a long, highly successful career as an elementary school principal. He met with both President George Bush and President Bill Clinton to discuss education and held office in both the NAESP and EMSPAC. He was a beloved principal at Allisonville Elementary and Guilford Lakes Elementary. He remembered and greeted each student by name as he walked the halls of his school. Each and every one held a special place in his heart. Educating our youth was his passion.

In his younger years, he was a true advocate for social change, active in local politics and the Knights of Columbus as well as working with at-risk youth in group home settings and young people with Down syndrome. Through his work, he touched the lives of so many young people.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 18, at McCook Beach Pavilion, Niantic. The family welcomes all to join them. Flowers and cards may be sent to Biddle Family, 20 Rock Ridge Road, Waterford, CT 06385.
