Old Saybrook

Joan Amend Thouin, 93, of Old Saybrook passed away on March 10 at her home.

Joan was raised in Bay Shore, Long Island, the oldest daughter of Alma and Andrew Begg. She was married to Andre Thouin in March of 1949. They were happily married for 64 years. In 1956, Andre’s business sent the couple to live in Switzerland. Joan happily met the challenge of living and raising their four children in a different country.

In 1987, Andre retired, and the couple returned to the United States. She and Andre were attracted to Old Saybrook because of the proximity of some family members and the quality of New England life. In retirement they enjoyed new friends, travel, and sailing the Connecticut River.

Joan was predeceased by her brother Andrew in 2008 and by her husband Andre in 2013. She is survived by her sister Susan Salisbury (Kevin) of Morristown, New Jersey, and by her four children, Andre II (Dianne) of Old Saybrook, and by the three who reside in Europe, Suzanne, Marc (Edith), and Guy (Marina). She leaves five grandsons, Andre III (Alanna), Christopher, Alexander, Jasper, and Remy. She also leaves two great-granddaughters, Paige and Zoey.

In addition to family, Joan was fortunate to have the support and love of numerous friends and neighbors who assisted in her desire to keep her independence and remain in her own home. Her family wishes to sincerely thank them.

Memorial services will be planned for a future date.
