Old Saybrook

Johann Diedrich Schwers passed peacefully at home after a short illness on Oct. 17, 2020.

He was predeceased by his wife, Annelise, nine years ago after having spent 62 years together; a younger sister, Adele; and a younger brother Dietrich.

Johann was born in Klenkerei, a rural village outside of Bremen in northern Germany in 1924. He earned his master’s certificate in baking, got married and opened a bakery nearby before immigrating with his wife and two sons to the U.S. in December 1957, and settling in Old Saybrook. He retired from Pfizer in 1986, traveled back to Germany a few times with Annelise to spend time with friends and relatives, and kept busy with gardening.

He is survived by his son, Hans, and his wife Paula of Middletown; grandson, Andrew, and his wife Nicole, along with two great-grandsons, Mason and Christopher, and as of November, great-granddaughter Ava, also of Middletown; and other son, Manfred, of Oakland, California.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a memorial service has not yet been scheduled. The Coughlin-Lastrina Funeral Home, 491 High Street, Middletown, is in charge of arrangements.
