Westbrook

Barbara (Hanna) Manstan, 97, of Westbrook passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 30. Born April 13, 1923, in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Drexel and Blanche (Wadlund) Hanna. Barbara was raised by her grandparents, Axel and Bertha (Kinander) Wadlund, in West Hartford, graduating from Weaver High School. She married the late Harold L. Manstan on April 10, 1943.

In 1950, the couple moved into the home they built in Westbrook, where they raised their two children, Roy (b. 1945) and Bonnie (b. 1954). Throughout her life, Barbara enjoyed her close friends and family, eventually working as the Westbrook Elementary School administrator’s secretary and occasionally as a teacher’s aide. Barbara and Harold were active in their community and as members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. With a shared interest in the prehistory of Connecticut, she and others of her family have been longtime members of the Friends of the Office of State Archaeology (FOSA).

Later in life, Barbara and Harold had opportunities to join their friends Jim Myers, a construction engineer building roads in exotic places, and his wife Mary on a variety of adventures in the Caribbean and far off Indonesia.

She will be remembered by her son Roy and her grandchildren, Daniel and Sarah; by her daughter and son-in-law Bonnie and Kenneth Beatrice and grandchildren Jeffrey, Kenneth, Gregory and their families; as well her nephews, David and Linda (Anderson) Nolf and Gary and Linda (Salisbury) Nolf and their children.

Thanks are extended to Swan Funeral Home, Westbrook Visiting Nurses, Middlesex Hospice, and to her caregivers Danette, Kyesha, Anneka, and Jody. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral or calling hours. A simple graveside service will occur at a later date. Donations in her memory can be made to the “Manstan-Nolf Memorial Technology Education Scholarship” at The Westbrook Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 528, Westbrook, CT 06498.
